Why：
The reason why I have chosen this topic is based on my background and past experience. I am a Chinese interior designer and I have learned interior design in Australia for 4 years. As a Chinese interior designer, I mainly focus on research about the difference between Chinese tractional interior design and the ‘New Chinese style’. When I do some research about Chinese traditional interior style, I find that I can only find a handful of useful articles or texts on digital platforms. ‘New Chinese style’, in contrast, there are lots of articles, videos even other designers’ works or floor plans on the digital platforms, but after I read some articles, I find that most of the authors think ‘new Chinese style’ is not related to Chinese traditional style, it is an individual style. In my opinion, although ‘new Chinese style’ is the mainstream of Chinese interior design, it is the combination of Chinese traditional style and modern western style.
Besides, after the surveys and interviews, I found that Chinese young people prefer western-style to ‘New Chinese style’ or traditional Chinese style, most of them think the Chinese style is antiquated, and the western style is more suitable for today’s society.

Among the Chinese architects and interior designers of my generation, Leoh Ming Pei is regarded as our spiritual leader, who was the pride of our Chinese architects and the example worth learning in our life . In his masterpiece ‘Bank of China Tower’, the tower is a special shape of tetrahedron superposition. Four triangular structures are combined together, with one of the structures extending upward. Leoh Ming Pei compared four triangular structures to bamboos, and he said: “In Chinese culture, bamboo means the power and flourishing momentum”.

Using a practice-based approach to explore Chinese interior design, my research question is: How might a new typology for Chinese interior design lead to a better integration of traditional Chinese culture in a contemporary context?
Research Aims
The aims of my research project include:
